The Bauman Salt & Sand Drop Spreader: Explained

What is a Drop Spreader?

The Drop Spreader is a piece of equipment designed to place material in a direct path. As opposed to broadcast spreaders, these machines are meant to evenly distribute material in a specific pattern, to provide more accuracy and prevent over-spread.

It's unique distribution system releases material in a fixed pattern that prevents wasted time and material and preserves natural landscapes.

Where is it used?

The Bauman Drop Spreader has been designed specifically for de-icing material. As such, this unit is meant for use in the cold months to eliminate slippery surfaces.

Due to their precise spread width, drop spreaders are ideal for narrow pathways, sidewalks, trails, winding laneways, and hard-to-reach spaces.

What sets Bauman’s Apart?

Our machines have been designed specifically to handle high-intensity work loads often endured by landscapers, public entities, and other professionals in the snow and ice industries. Heavy duty construction, a long-lasting powder coat finish, and innovative distribution system place the Bauman line of Drop Spreaders amongst industry leaders. With 9 unique models, alternate drive options, and accessories, we have units to match every specific need.

General Construction Features

  • Heavy-duty mild steel

  • Long-lasting powder coat finish

  • Drive components oil sprayed for longevity.

  • Varied hitch frameworks and mounting brackets for adaptability

Standard Operation Features

  • Sturdy Agitator to prevent bridging.

  • Rubber Flaps in the base prevent excess drop.

  • Unique Polymer Finger Bar holds flexibility in cold environments, ensuring consistent and direct flow of material.

  • Robust Distribution Drum

    • Standard Sand Drum: welded steel tabs periodically release pressure on fingers, allowing passage for de-icing materials.

    • Optional Salt Drum: tivar drum with milled pockets allows coarser materials to flow evenly.

What types of material can I use in my Drop Spreader?

The Bauman machines are designed for salt, sand, and other types of deicers compatible with the distribution drum.

As previously mentioned, the units come standard with the Sand Distributor Drum. The welded tabs release material in a helical pattern that remains within it’s drop width, but creeps to cover a maximum surface area. The best materials to use with the sand drum are:

  • Fine Salt

  • Medium Coarse Salts

  • De-icing Flakes

  • Bulk Rock Salts (Hydraulic or Electric models only)

The second option is the Tivar Salt drum, which comes with milled pockets rather than external tabs. These pockets allow coarse materials such as heavier rock salts to pass through the hopper. The best materials to use with this drum are:

  • Bulk Rock Salts

Unless you will consistently be using rock salt, we highly recommend the standard sand drum for your machine.

While you can adapt to heavier, coarser materials in with the sand drum, you will not be able to put finer sands or salts through the salt drum, should you choose to switch materials. Further, with greater ability to adjust the tension and flow of material on most models, the sand drum proves sufficient.

Note: De-icing pellets or brines should NEVER be used with this type of drop spreader, as neither function well within the distribution system due to their properties.

Drive Options

PTO: Select units set up with a Series 1 540-540RPM shaft.

Applicable Models: 640P, 1140P

Hydraulic: Hydraulic machines come with a hydraulic motor, hoses, and flow control, providing more control over material discharge.

Applicable Models: 440H, 640H, 1140H, 960H, 1040B, 1560B

Manual: This push-style model is driven when being pushed forward; the discharge being controlled by a gear-to-gear drive. Idles when moving backwards.

Applicable Models: 220

Tow-Behind: Complete with a 2”x2” clevis hitch receiver, this style is similarly driven by a gear-to-gear system, idling when moving backwards.

Applicable Models: 430T

Electric: These units are set up with an electric motor, complete wiring kit and variable speed control, which allows for greater control over material flow.

Applicable Models: 440E, 1040SI

Additional Options

The Drop Spreader galvanized lid protects de-icing material in snowy conditions.

Galvanized Lid: This heavy-duty lid is a no-brainer when you consider the protection of both your machine and your material. The hinged lid props overtop of the attachment system on the back of the tractor, protecting the machine from over-flow of material. Further, it will keep de-icing materials dry within the hopper, ensuring a consistent and effortless flow of material.

Applicable Models: 430T, 440E/H, 640H/P, 1140H/P, 960H

The Bauman Manufacturing 640H pictured with a hopper extension which increases it's capacity for de-icing material.

Hopper Extensions: Add 2.5 or 6 cubic feet of capacity to select models, allowing you to go further with a single load.

Applicable Models: 640H/P, 1140H/P

Vinyl Softcover: Another way to protect your material, this soft vinyl cover is light-weight and simple to apply and remove from the machine.

Applicable Models: 640H/P, 1140H/P, 1040SI
